Romania 1906 leu

formerly in the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1906. It commemorates the fortieth anniversary of Carol I's coronation as prince of Moldavia in 1866. The weight and fineness matches that of a French franc and Italian lira. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1914, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the leu resumed in 1924, it was a copper-nickel coin.
