CNG Lissner sale, lot 850

This specimen was lot 850 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $5,445. The catalog description^[1] noted, "ROMANIA, Kingdom. Carol I. 1881-1914. AR 5 Lei. Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Reign of Carol I. Brussels mint. Dually dated 1866 and 1906. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem toned uncirculated with very satiny surfaces and lightly patinated hues of violet and blue. Highest ever graded specimen for type. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, January 1975." This commemorative sold for nearly seven times the catalog value. It was the last silver five lei; the next five lei coin, issued in 1930, was a brass coin the size of a cent (KM 48).
