Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 601

This specimen was lot 601 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,605 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AV double souverain, 1612, Bruxelles. Seulement 993 p. frappées du 29 mai 1612 au 13 mars 1613. D/ Les archiducs trônant de f., Albert ten. une épée et Isabelle ten. un sceptre. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement rare. De qualité exceptionnelle, frappé sur flan large. Léger choc sur la tranche. Belle couleur. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, gold double souverain of 1612, Brussels mint, only 993 pieces struck between May 29, 1612, and March 13, 1613. Obverse: the archdukes enthroned, facing, Albert holding a sword and Isabella holding a scepter; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Extremely rare, exceptional quality, struck on a large planchet, rim bump, nice color, extremely Fine - Uncirculated.)"

This type superseded the double albertin d'or of 1601-09. It was struck throughout the Spanish Netherlands until 1657, including at Tournai (Fr-391) and Flanders (Fr-223). This undated specimen is from the very first issue.
