Sincona sale 46, lot 74

This specimen was lot 74 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$11,999 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Brandenburg/Prussia, Friedrich II. 1740-1786. Friedrichs dor 1742 EGN, Berlin. Brustbild im Harnisch mit Hermelin und Ordensband nach rechts. Rv. Adler auf Waffengruppe ohne Fahnen und mit Standarten an Ketten, darüber die Krone, im Abschnitt EGN - 1742. Fehlte in der Slg. Killisch von Horn. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. Vermutlich das einzige bekannte Exemplar. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II, 1740-86, frederick d'or of 1742, Berlin mint. Obverse: armored, mantled bust with sash to right; reverse: eagle rising over piled arms between two standards, crown above. Of the highest rarity, Good very fine, Probably the only known specimen.)"

Altho Frederick began his reign by minting ducats, in 1741 he switched to friedrichs d'or, a renamed version of the Wilhelm d'or minted by his father. The early issues, such as this one of 1741-46, are rare, but the coin later came to be quite common and was imitated by other North German states as a five thaler gold coin. Half and double friedrichs d'or exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.903 fine gold, this specimen 6.65 g.

Catalog reference: Olding 378 (this example). Kluge 6.1 (this example). Fr-2380, KM 234.
