Sincona sale 46, lot 68

This specimen was lot 68 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,120 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Brandenburg/Prussia, Friedrich II. 1740-1786. Dukat 1740, Berlin. Auf die Huldigung zu Königsberg am 20. Juli 1740. Kopf nach rechts. Rv. Stehende Justitia, mit der rechten Hand zur Sonne deutend, in der linken Hand Schwert und Waage, im Abschnitt HOMAG REGIOMONT/D 20 IVLI MDCCXL. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina. Fast vorzüglich. Minimal gewellt. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II, 1740-86, ducat of 1740, Berlin mint, for the homage to Königsberg on July 20. Obverse: head right; reverse: standing figure of Justice, holding up the sun with her right hand and holding a sword in the left. Attractive piece with nice patina, About extremely fine, Slightly wavy flan.)"

This type does not seem to be listed in the SCWC, perhaps because of its semi-medallic nature. This and the accompanying ducat for Berlin (Fr-2366) were the first gold issues of Frederick the Great. The ducat was superseded in Prussia by the friedrichs d'or (Fr-2380) worth five thalers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.45 g.

Catalog reference: Olding 375. Kluge 2.1. Fr-2365, KM unlisted.
