Jean Elsen sale 122, lot 930

This specimen was lot 930 in Jean Elsen sale 122 (Brussels, September 2014), where it sold for €100 (about US$153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR demi-franc, 1814 A, Paris. Fines griffes sur la joue. presque Superbe. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), silver half franc of 1814, Paris mint, fine scratches on the jaw, about extremely fine.)"

This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck 1809-14 and is most available of the Napoleonic demi-francs. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 65 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is priced about triple the common date (1813-A).

Recorded mintage: 106,620[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, decorated edge, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
