Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1691

This specimen was lot 1691 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €240 (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR demi-franc, 1813M, Toulouse. Fine griffe. Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-14. silver half franc of 1813, Toulouse mint. Fine scratch, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck in France at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date is somewhat scarce. It is common as branch mint issues go but still priced double an 1812-W or 1813-A.

Reported Mintage: 158,503[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
