Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 770
Sed50-0770o.jpg

This specimen was lot 770 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, 1760 V/q-Y/q-V/q, unique, ex-Mastalir. Full pillars and cross with two full dates, clear V/q at top right and Y/q at bottom left plus V/q to right of cross (first example we have seen or heard of), but perhaps the most important aspect is a clear (FERN)AND(VS) in the legend (which we would expect to be over-punched with CAROLVS if Carlos Janson was right in his 1985 monograph in Cuadernos de Numismática y Ciencias Históricas), VF with light toning in crevices and a few tiny black spots. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir Collection, with his tag." This type was struck for Ferdinand VI 1747-60. The SCWC lists only assayer "q" for 1760 while assayer "V" stamped coins for Charles III, who succeeded in 1759. By this date, Mexico, Guatemala, Santiago and Lima were striking pillar two reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 6.65 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-limonite; S-unl; KM-unl (38 for type); Cal-unl (Type 45).
