Peru 1760-L JM 8 reales
This specimen was lot 123 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 700 euro (about US$1,110 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1760. Lima. JM. 8 escudos. Columnario. Punto sobre la primera LMA. Leves golpes. Suave pátina. Bella. Rara así. EBC (eight reales of 1760, Lima mint, pillar type. Dot over the first mintmark, light marks, nice toning, rare thus, extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1751-60 for Ferdinand VI; for 1760, specimens are known with a dot over both mintmarks as well as issues in the name of Charles III.
Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
Recorded mintage: 2,555,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.
