Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72222

This specimen was lot 72222 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $504. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1595-SB. Seville Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. This charming 4 Reales piece displays pleasing detail despite its compact flan and noted cleaning marks. The obverse shows the mintmark, assayer, and denomination to the left along with the full four-digit date to the right, all quite boldly. The reverse castles and lions are well-struck and nicely centered. The surfaces are toned to a moderate dove gray that lends some antique charm to this piece. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Seville struck four real cobs throughout the 1590's and it was usually the most prolific producer. Assayer B is listed for 1591-1615.
