Spain 1600-S B 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72228 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1600-S B. Seville Mint. Philip III. PCGS EF-40. While this Cob does not show much detail due to its compact flan and somewhat rough surfaces, it retains a very clear date on the reverse. Other details include the assayer, a complete Habsburg shield, and quite pleasing castles and lions. A rustic but appealing example of the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." While mentioning four reales for Seville for 1599 and 1601, for some reason Cayón omits this date. Seville struck this type 1599-1621. Assayer B is listed for 1591-1615.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.61 g.
