Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1871

This specimen was lot 1871 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €550 (about US$762 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Philippe II (1556-1598), AR 2 reales, 1595, Valladolid. D/ Écu couronné entre la date et °/D. R/ Quadrilobe anglé aux armes de Castille et Leon. (kingdom of Spain, Philip II, 1556-98, silver two reales of 1595, Valladolid mint. Obverse: crowned arms divide the date; reverse: angled quadrilobe with the arms of Castile and Leon. Very Fine.)"

This type is noted for 1592-98 and undated. The Valladolid mintmark is the three banners (sometimes four) below the date. Cayón notes varieties with the date on the reverse (Cay-3690) and with the assayer initial "D" to the left (Cay-3691). The Valladolid mint operated intermittently until 1686.
