Goldberg sale 128, lot 1254
G128-1254r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1254 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes, 1701-P (Dijon). Louis XIV. Date not listed in Gadoury, listed in Duplessy. Struck over earlier type. The only example graded at PCGS. PCGS graded VF-25." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The demi-louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1701-03, was succeeded by the demi-louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Altho the louis d'or of this period are available for a price, the demi-louis are all very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown rf (none on new blanks)[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, 21 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 423, Dr/2 no. 271, Duplessy 1443A, Fr-437; Gad-241; KM-332.9.
