Ponterio sale 182, lot 573
France 1813flag franc rev P182-573.jpg

This specimen was lot 573 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. 1 Franc, 1813. Utrecht Mint. PCGS VF-30 Secure Holder. RARE. Flag mintmark." This issue, from the Utrecht mint, is a rare date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. This date is priced[1] about six times the common date (1811A).

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier.

Recorded Mintage: 69,257[1], 69,000[2], 87,095[4].

Catalog reference: KM-692.17; Gad-447, F.205/71, Sch-170.
