This specimen was lot 1291 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1795 IJ, NGC AU details / rev scratched, "top pop," ex-Almenara. Super luster with splashy red toning all over, deep scratch from rim on reverse, otherwise choice, tied with one other for finest in the NGC census. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer IJ is recorded for 1787-1803.
