Sed37-1229r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1229 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 4 escudos, Charles IV, 1796 IJ, NGC AU 50, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Traces of luster, weak bust with some wear and marks but no big problems. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1791-1801, 1804-07 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer IJ is recorded for 1787-1803.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14360, Cal-1458; Fr-41; KM-98.
