This specimen was lot 20240 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,667.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 4 Escudos 1796PP, toned VF-XF, a very nice example with bold details and no obvious flaws. Elusive denomination for Potosi gold." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791-1808 and is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but likely a few thousand at most.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.901 fine gold, .393 troy oz AGW.
