This specimen was lot 2203 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,014 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"France, Louis XIV. 1643-1715 Ecu aux huit L 1692 P. Dijon Réformation. Fast-vorzüglich. NGC AU55. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the eight L's of 1692, Dijon mint, reformed. About extremely fine.)"
The specimen shown is an écu aux 8 L struck in Bordeaux during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.
Recorded mintage: scarce in "flans neufs" plus "signalé mais non confirmé" of "flans reformés."
Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
