Aureo sale 238, lot 466

This specimen is one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It is a common date and type, though the SCWC values it about 50% more than the contemporary Mexican issue. Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1803-25. The second specimen was lot 466 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 90 euro (about US$143 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1808. Potosí. PJ. 8 reales. Atractiva. EBC-. (eight reales of 1808, Potosí mint. Attractive, nearly extremely fine.)"

Altho eight reales of Ferdinand VII dated 1808 are known, they were almost certainly minted later as they bear the standard bust of the king not used until 1811 in Mexico.

Recorded mintage: 3,299,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13984, Cal. 732, KM 73.
