This specimen was lot 25339 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20 Pesos 1900 Mo-M, MS65 NGC, a high grade example of this popular type with full mint brilliance and just a few tiny surface marks. Incredibly elusive this fine, with NGC having only graded a single MS65 for the date, two (including the present) for type and only two finer (for the type)." This type was struck at Mexico City 1870-1905. The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Chihuahua, Hermosillo, Oaxaca and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The 1900MoM is considered a common date. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.
Recorded mintage: 21,000.
Specification: 33.84 g, 0.875 fine gold, .953 troy oz AGW.
