Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1826

This specimen was lot 1826 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$34,256 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, Koninkrijk, Willem II (1840-1849), AV 20 gulden (dubbele negotiepenning), 1848. Slechts 95 st. geslagen. Uiterst zeldzaam Prachtexemplaar met gepolijste stempels geslagen. bijna Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William II, 1840-49, gold twenty gulden of 1848. Only 95 pieces struck, extremely rare, prooflike, about Uncirculated.)"

This gold twenty gulden was struck in such small quantities as to be a pattern. It was accompanied by gold ten gulden (Fr-336) and five golden (Fr-337), also very rare. Subsequent twenty gulden struck during the reign of William III (Fr-339) are also rare but a tiny bit more available.

Recorded mintage: 95.

Specification: 13.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered GOD * ZY * MET * ONS *.
