Netherlands 1848 5 gulden

Sincona sale 77, lot 2846

This specimen was lot 2846 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 15,000 CHF (about US$18,207 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Kingdom of the Netherlands. Wilhelm II. 1840-1849. 5 Gulden 1848, Utrecht. Halve negotiepenning. Von grösster Seltenheit. Nur 84 Exemplare geprägt. PCGS PL63 CAM. Prachtvoller Erstabschlag. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William II, 1840-49, five gulden of 1848, Utrecht mint, prooflike. Of the highest rarity. Only 84 pieces struck, Magnificent first strike.)"

This gold ten gulden was struck in such small quantities as to be a pattern. It was accompanied by gold twenty gulden (Fr-335) and ten golden (Fr-336), also very rare. Subsequent five gulden struck during the reign of William III (Fr-341) are also rare but a tiny bit more available.

Specification: 3.36 g, 0.900 fine gold, .097 troy oz AGW, 18.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
