Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51108

This specimen was lot 51108 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1947. London Mint. George VI. PCGS PROOF-66 Deep Cameo. English reverse. The finest example of the type in the PCGS census, and the only to receive the highly enticing 'deep cameo' designation, this resounding minor sports a subtle champagne hue and stunning overall eye appeal." This type was struck 1947-48. It was the first copper-nickel shilling but still had the reverse legend "FID:DEF IND:IMP". Another shilling, KM 864, was struck with the Scottish crest on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 12,121,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper nickel, 23.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
