The first specimen was lot 787 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €245 (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR 44 sols de Strasbourg, 1709BB. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver 44 sols de Strasbourg of 1709. Obverse: cuirassed bust to right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Nice patina, Very fine.)"
The specimen shown is a 44 sols de Strasbourg struck at that town during the reign of Louis XIV. It is the same size as the earlier 33 sols de Strasbourg. The type was issued 1709-13 from that mint in fairly large numbers but is today scarce. It was likely struck for circulation in Germany.
Recorded mintage: 1,602,248, the most common date.
Specification: 12.39 g, 0.833 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers; the first specimen 12,15 g.
