Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1784

This specimen was lot 1784 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu aux insignes, 1702 O, Riom. 3e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, brochant sur une main de justice et un sceptre posés en sautoir. Rare. Frappe faible. Réformé sur un quart d'écu aux palmes. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver quarter écu of the insignia of 1702, Poitiers mint, third reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned round arms of France over the hand of justice and a scepter. Rare, weakly struck over a quarter écu of the palms. Fine - Very Fine.)"

Shown is a quart d'écu aux insignes (quarter écu with insignia) struck at the Paris mint for France in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck 1701-03 in substantial numbers. There are also twelfth, half and one écus struck during this period with this design. This date is somewhat scarce for the type. The earlier quart d'écu aux 8 L of 1690-93 (see 1691-B quart d'écu aux 8 L) featured a different reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce; known only on reformed blanks.

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, reeded edge, this specimen 6,35 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1535B; Gad-156, Dr/4 № 695, Dr/2 № 428, KM 324.
