Sincona sale 83, lot 3597

This specimen was lot 3597 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 3,100 CHF (about US$4,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANIEN, José Napoléon, 1808-1814. 20 Reales 1812 LA, Sevilla. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS63. Feine Patina. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (kingdom of Spain, Joseph Napoleon, 1808-14, twenty reales of 1812, Seville mint. Very rare in this condition, Nicely toned, Finest certified by NGC)." This twenty reales de vellon was struck in Seville during the regime of José Napoleon, the French emperor's older brother. The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set twenty reales = 1 peso instead of the traditional eight. This type was struck at Seville 1812 only. It is much rarer than the similar pesos of Madrid or Barcelona.

Recorded mintage: 13,000.

Specification: 27.08 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 551.3, Cayón-14716, AC 45, Dav-308.
