Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 766
Sed50-0771o.jpg

This specimen was lot 771 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, 1773/2 V-Y, V at lower right on pillars side, very rare, ex-Mastalir. Bold full pillars with very clear 773/2 (especially the overdate), full V at top right and most of same at bottom right, with clear P at top left and what appears to be the top of a Y at bottom left, bold but off-center cross, only Fine (and a little underweight) but with very nice old toning. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir Collection, with his tag." This type was struck for Charles III 1760-73 and this was the final date of cob production at any colonial mint. Portrait coinage was introduced to Upper Peru in 1773 along with a debasement to 0.903 fine. Cobs, however, continued to circulate for decades thereafter, as numerous counterstamps attest.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 5.57 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-limonite; S-P59; KM-43; Cal-704.
