Bolivia 1773-PTS JR 2 reales
This specimen was lot 616 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $238. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosi, Bolivia, bust 2 reales, Charles III, 1773JR, with dot after king's name, unlisted variety with dots as doughnut shapes, NGC AU 50. Broad flan that extends past the corded rims, much wear for the grade but with clean fields, lightly toned, second finest in NGC census behind a single AU 55, very curious variety with a central depression in all the dots (reason unknown) with the exception of the complete dot between the mintmark and denomination." The type was struck 1773-89. Harris[2] notes that Potosi two reales of Charles III are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. The second specimen was lot 850 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[3] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, bust 2 reales, Charles III, 1773 JR, GRATA error, rare. Bold VF with dark, contrasting toning (especially in legends), popular spelling error (GRATA instead of GRATIA) that seldom hits the market."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
