Bolivia 1773-PTS JR 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 75095 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $149. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/2 Real, 1773-PTS JR. Potosi Mint. Charles III. PCGS EF-45. From the Richard August Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1773-89 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1791 by the bust of Charles IV. Harris[2] notes that Potosi half reales of Charles III are second to Mexico City as the commonest mint, reporting about three-sevenths the quantity known from Mexico City. Assayer JR is recorded for 1767-76.
