Goldberg sale 65, lot 4213

The specimen shown is an example of a type first struck in Santiago, Chile, in 1926. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 4213 in Goldberg sale 65 (Los Angeles, September 2011), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile. 100 Pesos, 1961-So. Liberty head. Scarce in this quality. NGC graded MS-68."

Recorded mintage: 295,000.

Specification: 20.34 g, 0.900 fine gold, .588 troy oz AGW

Catalog reference: Fr-54; KM-175.
