Chile 1960 100 pesos
This specimen was lot 32588 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Pesos 1960-So 1960 MS63 Prooflike NGC, Santiago mint." The specimen shown is an example of a type first struck in Santiago, Chile, in 1926. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold twenty pesos (KM 168) and fifty pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive.
