Chile 1958 20 pesos
This specimen was lot 70385 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 20 Pesos, 1958-So. NGC MS-63. RARE date, from a mintage of only 500 pieces. Good strike with soft satin luster. Brilliant and attractive. Ex: Stack's April 29-30, 1975 #267." This gold twenty pesos piece was minted in Santiago in 1926, 1958-64, 1976-80. It was accompanied by similar fifty (KM 169) and hundred pesos (KM 170) in gold. Like most attempts to circulate gold after World War One, it was a failure. Subsequent issues were sold as bullion pieces. The preceding gold twenty pesos of 1905-17 (KM 158) was 11.98 g, 0.917 fine.
