The specimen shown is an example of a type first struck in Santiago, Chile, in 1926. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold twenty pesos (KM 168) and fifty pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 30264 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Pesos 1958-So MS68 NGC, Santiago mint. Another unusually choice specimen of this issue. From The Law Collection."

Recorded mintage: 157,000.

Specification: 20.34 g, 0.900 fine gold, .588 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-54; KM-175.
