Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1570

This specimen was lot 1570 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €120 (about US$170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHILI, République (1818-), AV 20 pesos, 1926. Superbe. (republic of Chile, gold twenty pesos of 1926, extremely fine.)"

This gold twenty pesos piece was minted in Santiago in 1926, 1958-64, 1976-80. It was accompanied by similar fifty and hundred pesos (KM 170) in gold. Like most attempts to circulate gold after World War One, it was a failure. Subsequent issues were sold as bullion pieces. The preceding gold twenty pesos of 1905-17 (KM 158) was 11.98 g, 0.917 fine.

Recorded mintage: 85,000.

Specification: 4.07 g, 0.900 fine, 18.5 mm diameter.
