Heritage sale 3021, lot 22169

This specimen was lot 22169 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Milan. Maria Theresa of Austria 6 Lire (Scudo) 1778, MS62 NGC, a most attractive example with rich old-time patina and significant mint luster, especially on the reverse. The details are boldly executed on both sides and the overall eye appeal is excellent. A highly elusive type in mint state." This type was struck 1778-80 at the end of the reign of the redoubtable Maria Theresia. Similar scudi were struck for Joseph II 1781-86 (Dav-1387), after which the crocione was introduced. Austria lost Milan to the French in 1797.
