China SB620-72291r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72291 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $21,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 1000 Yuan, 1990. Panda Series. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. An attractive example of this low-mintage issue which showcases extreme frost over the designs and deep reflectivity in the fields. As is common for the date, a few instances of reddish color appear over both sides, but none are highly concentrated or distracting." This twelve ounce gold panda was the largest issued up to that time.

Recorded mintage: 500 proofs.

Specification: 373.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 70 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-B2; KM 275; PAN-123a.
