The specimen shown was struck in Durango, which minted half escudos 1833-64. It was lot 3314 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1853 CP 1/2 escudo. Durango mint. MS-63 (NGC). Types as above. Pale orange gold with some lustre remaining, lightly hairlined. A rare date. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The date is so crudely cut that it is difficult to determine whether it really is an overdate, and there aren't enough of this date around to decide if all the known specimens are similar. Long[2] is not clear.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, .875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 1.72 grams, 14.90 mm diameter.
