This specimen was lot 33809 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles and Johanna gold Escudo ND (1516-1556) D-S AU58 NGC, Seville mint. A truly stunning exemplar of the type with bright surfaces chalked with die polish lines and some clear signs of double-striking in the center of the reverse. Some rim damage is to be noted, and expected for this usually rough type, though the present example otherwise far exceeds its nearest counterpart." This issue comes with a star on the left (Cayón-3147), a star on the right (Cayón-3146) or a square "D" (Cayón-3148, shown here, and -3149). Cayón states that this type was restruck in 1599-1602.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, .931 fine gold.
