Sincona sale 69, lot 887

This specimen was lot 887 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$14,599 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Utrecht, Provinz. 2 Dukaten 1759. Goldabschlag von den Stempel des 1/4 Guldens. Stehende Holländische Magd - Staande Nederlandse maagd. Prachtexemplar. (Netherlands, province of Utrecht, double ducat of 1759, off metal strike using quarter gulden dies. Obverse: standing Dutch maid. Cabinet piece. NGC MS62+.)"

The silver quarter gulden was struck 1758-59 and is common. The gold version, also struck 1758-59, is rare. The quarter gulden had a face value of five stuivers. It was likely abandoned in favor of the scheepjeschilling, worth six stuivers, already in production.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: KM 113: 2.65 g, 0.920 fine silver; KM 113a: 7 g, gold, this specimen 6.98 g.

Catalog reference: KM 113 (silver), KM 113a (gold), Delmonte 985 (R2).
