Holland 1759 1/4 gulden
This type was struck in Holland 1759 only in silver (shown here) and gold. The design is more familiar on the one gulden (KM 73) and three gulden. This type is more common than a one year type would suggest, so perhaps it was struck with a frozen date. The second specimen was lot 30281 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $540.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Holland. Provincial 1/4 Gulden 1759 MS67 NGC. A truly outstanding example of this standing maiden type, displaying sparkling honeydew obverse luster and complimentary lilac reverse luminescence. Fully-bold and visually remarkable, this is currently the singular, finest-known certified example of this one-year type, and one that is absolutely worthy of a premium bid." The third specimen was lot 33826 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $7,800. The lot description[2] noted, "Netherlands: Holland. Provincial gold 1/4 Gulden 1759 MS63 NGC. An exciting off-metal gold production, struck to a weight of 1-1/2 Ducats, more often seen struck to a weight of 2 Ducats. A "Top Pop" example, with a beautiful lustrous gleam to enhance the scarcity."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.65 g, .920 fine silver. The third specimen is 5.23 g.
Catalog reference: KM 100 (silver), the third specimen is KM 100a, Delmonte-808 (R2).
