Gelderland 1756 1/4 gulden
This specimen was lot 31694 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Gelderland. Provincial gold 1/4 Gulden 1756 MS62+ NGC, Harderwijk mint. A rare piece and a cause for celebration when encountered in this glorious, near-Choice state of preservation. Admitting only an occasional wisp of handling, the surfaces appear fresh and reflective with faint die polish lines. From the Coenen Collection." This type was struck in silver 1756 and 1759, and in gold 1759 only. The quarter gulden was five stuivers and was usually overshadowed by the six stuivers or scheepjesschelling, a denomination never struck in Gelderland.
