This specimen was lot 1105 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$738 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH Charles IX. 1560-1574. Ecu d'or au soleil 1566, Rouen. Gekröntes Wappen, darüber Sonne. Rv. Lilienkreuz, im Zentrum das Mzz. Kl. Schrötlingsf. Sehr schön. (France, Charles IX, 1560-74, écu d'or au soleil of 1566, Rouen mint. Obverse: crowned arms, suburst above; reverse: floriate cross, mintmark "B," a few digs, very fine.)"
This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. This type was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. This is a somewhat available date.
Recorded mintage: 113,100 (two mintmasters) including a few demi-écus.
Specification: 3.37 g, .958 fine gold, plain edge; this specimen is 3,32 g.
