France 1567-H ecu d'or

This specimen was lot 20179 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1567-H. Charles IX (1560-74). NGC MS-63. Date in Roman numerals. Struck on a nice round flan with full legends on both sides. Soft satin luster and good eye appeal." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends.

Recorded mintage: 7,599 including a few demi-écus d'or, a common date.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine gold.
