France 1567-L teston

This specimen was lot 1730 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $72. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Teston, 1567-L (Bayonne). Charles IX. Laureate and cuirassed bust left. Reverse: Crowned shield, flanked by two crowned K's, L under the shield. NGC graded VF-20." Sombart[2] reports eighteen known in his survey, making this a common date. The Bayonne mint was the only one to use crowned K's instead of crowned C's on the reverse. The teston had a face value of twelve sols tournois.

Recorded mintage: 180,565[2], including a few half testons.

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.899 fine silver, this specimen 9.48 g.
