This specimen was lot 70114 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or au Soleil, 1567-I. Limoges Mint. Charles IX. NGC MS-63. Incredible quality for the type that is RARELY seen, this remarkable piece offers a good deal of brilliance and stands as the only example graded in the NGC census." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends.

Recorded mintage: 10,200[3] including a few demi-écus d'or, a somewhat common date.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine silver, this specimen 3.33 g.
