Goldberg NY International sale 58, lot 1044
GNY23-1044r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1044 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,260. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Charles IX (1560-1574). Gold Ecu d'or, 1567-N. Montpellier mint. Crowned arms. Rev. Floriated cross. Struck on a full flan with much luster remaining. The only example graded at PCGS. In PCGS holder graded MS 61." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. In his survey, Sombart found none of this date; we conclude that it is rare. The archives show that Montpellier struck this type 1562-71.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine gold, this specimen 3.38 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-378; Dup 1057; Sb 4904 (0 ex.).
