France 1566-A ecu d'or
This specimen was lot 772 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Frankreich, konigreich, Charles IX. 1560-1574. Ecu d'or au soleil 1566 A, Paris. NGC MS 63."
This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. This type was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. This is one of the most common dates.
Recorded mintage: 180,450 including a few demi-écus.
