This specimen was lot 34575 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Charles IX gold Écu d'or au soleil 1565-T AU50 NGC, Nantes mint. CAROLVS • VIIII • D • G • FRANCOR • REX • M • D • LXV, sunburst above crowned royal shield / CHRISTVS • REGNAT • VINCIT • ET • IMPERAT, T in center of cross fleurdelissee. An appreciable gold selection struck upon a slightly wavy flan that typically accompany these early issues. From the Long Island Collection." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. This type was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641.

Recorded mintage: 9,800, a scarce date.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine gold, plain edge.
