France 1564-E ecu d'or
This specimen was lot 1039 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Charles IX (1560-1574). Gold Ecu d'or, 1564-E. Tours mint. Crowned Ecu of France, sun above. Rev. Floriated cross. Portion of flan weakly struck. The only example graded at PCGS. In PCGS holder graded MS 62." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. In his survey, Sombart found none of this date; we conclude that it is rare. The archives show that Tours struck this type 1562-70 and 1574-75.
Recorded mintage: 8,382[2].
Specification: 3.37 g, .958 fine gold, this specimen 3.34 g.
