This specimen was lot 99101 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Charles IX (1560-1574) gold Ecu d'Or au soleil 1565-G MS61 NGC, Poitiers mint. CAROLVS • IX • DEI • G • FRANCOR • REX, sunburst above crowned royal shield / +XPS • REGNAT • VINCIT • ET • IM • 1565 (rosette), G in center of cross fleurdelissee. Unquestionably sharp and fully Mint State, with a deeply impressed array of design features and just minor evidence of die stress on the reverse indicated by several thin die cracks." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. This type was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. This is a fairly common date, with twelve reported in Sombart.

Recorded mintage: 38,010 including a few demi-écus.
